Long Tall Ernie & The Shakers ontstaat in 1972 min of meer als grap uit de Arnhemse groep Moan, voorheen The Moans, waarin ook onder meer Herman Brood, pianist Jaap Dekker en de latere Cuby & The Blizzards-bassist en Music Maker hoofdredacteur Jaap van Eik hun carrières beginnen. Bij optredens speelt Moan 'progressieve' popmuziek, na de pauze komen de leden verkleed als rockers terug en spelen een set rock & roll-covers als Long Tall Ernie & The Shakers. Zanger Arnie Treffers is tegelijkertijd actief in de band Arnhem. 
 

UNKNOWN CONCERT 1973 ??

Ze komen in 1973 onder de hoede van manager Rein Muntinga, die met Treffers ook actief is in het Spijkerkwartet. Daarop worden de zaken serieuzer aangepakt. Moan verdwijnt uit het voorprogramma. Via een uitgekiende publiciteitscampagne worden The Shakers gelanceerd als onvervalst ruige rock & roll-act. Geruchten over agressieve en criminele bandleden, vermeende vechtpartijen met platenbazen en een wilde podium-act doen hun werk. The Shakers scoren op de golven van de eerste rock & roll revival grote hits met singles als Big Fat Mama, Get Yourself Together en Allright. Tv-optredens en concerten in Duitsland volgen.

Jan 'Jumping Johnny' Rietman en Henk 'The Knife' Bruysten verlaten de groep, later gevolgd door Alfons 'Muscles' Haket en Alan 'Tenderfoot' MacFarlane. Rietman gaat bij Unit Gloria spelen en vervolgt zijn solo uitstapjes als The Killer. Treffers maakt de soloplaat Arnie. Henk Bruysten richt het op Duane Eddy geënte Hank The Knife & The Jets op en scoort grote hits met o.a. Guitar King en Stan The Gunman. Bij The Shakers worden de plaatsen rond de centrale man 'Long Tall' Arnie Treffers na wat wisselingen ingenomen door Tony Britnell (saxofonist van Shakin' Stevens & The Sunsets), Karl Busköhl (gitaar), Ruud van Buuren (bas) (ex-Livin' Blues) en Jan Pijnenburg (drums) (ex-Lucifer en Sweet d'Buster).
 

Bilzen Festival 1973

Treffers zingt op het album Rhythm And Booze van G.T. Walls, waarachter zich Telegraaf sportjournalist Gert-Rein van der Waal verschuilt. Hank the Knife maakt na het uiteenvallen van The Jets een solosingle onder de naam Silverstone. The Shakers scoren hun allergrootste hits met potpourri's van oude rock & roll successen, Do You Remember (geprodudeerd door Jaap Eggermont) en Golden Years Of Rock & Roll. 

Samen met Tony Britnell vormt Arnie Treffers een schrijversduo dat verantwoordelijk is voor hits van Shirley (It's Me, 1977), Snoopy (It's All In The Bible, 1979), Albert West (Girls & Cadillacs, 1980) en Sugar & the Lollipops (I Can Dance en Dancing Dymamo uit 1981). I Can Dance behaalt zelfs de eerste plaats in de Deense hitparade.
 

1978 Culture Week 20 Long Tall Ernie & The Shakers performance for 300 Fans .....

De vetkuiven-acts worden in 1979 afgeschaft. Het concept-album Meet The Monsters, over monsters van het witte doek, kan de groep echter niet meer redden. Hank The Knife komt terug met Hank The Knife & The Crazy Cats, met wie hij een jaar later nog eenmaal een top tien hit scoort. Gitarist Jos Jaspers en drummer Eugene Arts gaan verder met Turbo.

Treffers maakt in '80 het solo-album Sniper In The Crowd onder de naam Schultz. Om onder het Nederlandse contract met Polydor uit te komen gebruiken The Shakers de groepsnaam The Block voor het uitbrengen van een single op de Duitse markt.

The Shakers vallen in 1982 definitief uiteen. De Shakers, die het tot roem zullen schoppen zijn Jan Rietman in de hoedanigheid van pianist van het Los/Vast orkest en presentator van het gelijknamige NCRV t.v.-programma , Karl Busköhl als Carl Carlton & The Songdogs, en Hank The Knife & The Jets.

In 1983 gaat Arnie naar Denemarken, waar hij nog in het huwelijk trad.
Op 25 augustus 1995 overlijdt Arnie Treffers, in de woning van zijn broer Ebe in Groningen, aan longkanker.  Arnie Treffers is 48 jaar geworden. Een groot verlies voor de muzikale wereld.

Long Tall Ernie & The Shakers as a group was born in 1972, as a joke of the group THE MOANS, lateron MOAN, inwich members were like Herman Brood, keyboard-player Jaap Dekker and the Cuby & The Blizzards bass-player and Music Maker Chief-Editor Jaap van Eijk. At the performances 'MOAN' did play progressive popmusic, after the the break, they came back in a different outfit as rockers and performed a set of rock 'n roll covers as Long Tall Ernie & The Shakers. Singer Arnie Treffers also is active in the group Arnhem at that time.
 

In 1973 manager Rein Muntinga is coming, also active in The Spijkerkwartet and business is going on to be serious. Moan is dead and The Shakers are launched in a publicity campaign, as rough rockers with rock 'n roll act. There were rumours about agressive and criminal bandmembers, fighting with recordmanagers and a rough act on stage did complete the job. The Shakers did score their first hits at the rock & roll revival with singles as Big Fat Mama, Get yourself together and Allright. TV acts and concerts in Germany did come up then.

UNKNOWN CONCERT 1973 ??

The Rock 'n Roll acts are gone in 1979. The concept-album Meet The Monsters, about monsters on the wide screen, could not save the group anymore. Hank The Knife is coming back with Hank The Knife & The Crazy Cats, a year later there's still one more hit to go. Guitarist Jos Jaspers and drummer Eugene Arts are going on with Turbo.

In the 80's Treffers did make the solo-album Sniper In The Crowd synonymous as Schultz. To get rid of the Dutch contract with The Shakers uses the groupname 'The Block' in releasing a single for the German market.

In 1982 The Shakers did split-up. The ex-Shakers, which will become famous are Rietman, as bandleader, piano-player of the Los/Vast orchestra and TV host of the same called NCRV t.v.-program, Karl Bushkohl as Carl Carlton & The Songdogs, and Hank The Knife & The Jets.

In 1983 Arnie moved to Denmark and also got married.
On August 25 in 1995 Arnie Treffers died at home of his brother Ebe in Groningen, suffering of  cancer. Arnie Treffers did reach the age of 48 years old. A great lost for all of us!
